Mansio Montessori of Geneva serves children ages 15 months through 5 years. Divided into toddler and primary/mixed ages classes. The school has a total of 5 classrooms. Each class is lead by a team of 2 teachers, with class sizes appropriate to the ages of the children. Using Montessori principles, our dedicated, experienced teachers create an environment that is both nurturing and educationally stimulating for the children. Teachers work together so that as children pass through the classes during their years at MMOG, they build on their experiences in each classroom.
“Education is not something which the teacher does, but it is a natural process which develops spontaneously in the human being. It is not acquired by listening to words, but by virtue of experiences in which the child acts on his environment. Our educational aim with very young children must be to aid the spontaneous development of the mental, spiritual and physical personality.”
- Dr. Maria Montessori
To grasp the essence of a Montessori education, just step inside a Montessori classroom. Beautiful, inviting, and thoughtfully arranged. It is a hive of exploration and discovery where the child develops strengths, learns at his own pace and finds their own talents.
In the Beginning Toddler program, the emotional atmosphere is paramount. The child must feel safe and secure in order to separate easily from the parent and go about his work. Conversely, the parent must feel that the child is safe and well cared for in a secure atmosphere. Independence is fostered by giving the child the opportunity to take care of his own needs in regards to caring for his clothing, choosing a work, cleaning up, preparing and enjoying snack, and using the toilet.
Our goal is to help the child in the development of language by giving him the vocabulary he needs to express himself clearly. The staff models the proper use of language in our communication with the child and with other adults. We talk about all of the things we are doing and give the proper name of all of the things in the environment.
Also, we help the child perfect his movement by providing activities to develop coordination and to develop a sense of where his body is in relation to the space around him. We continually observe the child so that we can provide him with the proper materials he needs to teach himself. The staff is well trained in the Montessori philosophy, which is one of respect for the individual development of the child, so the learning process comes from within the child and not external controls.
The Toddler program takes advantage of the toddler’s natural drive to act independently. Each child’s growth and development is fostered through a well-prepared environment designed specifically for toddlers. We recognize that children learn by doing and prepare the environment with this in mind. The teacher implements a toddler designed curriculum to foster cognitive development, speech, and language development, strengthen fine and gross motor skills, introduce grace and courtesy, and promote independence and respect.
An important part of a toddler’s developing independence is learning to care for him and his environment through practical life works such as washing his own hands, dressing himself, independently toileting and cleaning up after himself.
Sensorial activities assist Toddlers in the task of organizing and learning about their senses while refining fine motor development and fostering concentration.
Classroom materials are accessible, attractive, and geared for a child’s success. Activities are changed regularly in response to children’s need for variety and challenge as they grow and learn. The safe, loving, gentle atmosphere puts children and parents at ease and makes for a trusting transition to school.
The main goal of the 3-6 program is to help each child reach their full potential in all areas of life. Promoting the growth of a positive self image and self confidence about him/herself, as well as independence, is the key to the development of a child’s full potential. Through nurturing the well being of the “whole child” (physical, social, emotional, and cognitive) children have the opportunity to grow to be the best they can be.
Secondly, our goal is to provide a prepared environment that allows us to follow the child. We will assist the children to develop skills of inner discipline, integrity, respect, kindness, and courtesy. We will guide the child in his/her mental and physical ability to work appropriately within the environment.
Finally, we will provide freedom within limits allowing the children to pursue skills and knowledge at their own pace. Also expecting responsibility, sense of community, and contribution to a more peaceful and corporative classroom and world.
Kindergartners bloom into confident, well-prepared children ready to go to the next grade level.
This is the final year of the 3-year cycle that puts everything they’ve learned into practice. Children will be the mentors to the younger children and hone their leadership skills.
